Why Tile Makes Sense in Salem Homes

Built to Last Decades

Salem's rainy seasons make tile the obvious choice for entryways and mudrooms β€” track in as much mud as Oregon can produce and a sealed tile floor takes maybe 30 seconds to clean up. In kitchens and bathrooms, there's simply no better option for a wet zone.

Tile done right is nearly indestructible. Tile done wrong cracks, shifts, and develops hollow spots within a year. The difference is entirely in the substrate preparation, thinset coverage, and grout selection β€” areas where we don't cut corners.

  • 100% waterproof β€” the only sensible choice for bathrooms and wet rooms
  • Handles Oregon's muddy winters in entryways and mudrooms without damage
  • Won't scratch, dent, fade, or stain the way softer materials do
  • Keeps rooms cooler in summer β€” a bonus in Salem's warm Julys and Augusts
  • Compatible with in-floor radiant heat systems
  • Properly installed, a tile floor can last 50+ years

Our Installation Process

Why Our Tile Doesn't Crack

πŸ“
Layout Planning

We dry-lay the tile before setting a single piece. Centering matters β€” you shouldn't walk into a room and immediately notice a sliver cut at one wall. We plan so borders are symmetrical and the focal point is centered.

πŸ—οΈ
Substrate Preparation

Tile requires a rigid, flat substrate. We check for deflection, flatten high spots, fill low areas, and install cement backer board where needed. Skipping this is why tile cracks.

πŸͺ£
95%+ Back Coverage

We use the correct thinset for your tile type and achieve industry-standard back coverage on every piece. Hollow tiles β€” where thinset didn't make full contact β€” crack under point load. We don't leave them.

πŸ”²
Grout Selection & Spacing

Grout color and joint width completely change how tile looks. We help you choose what works for your tile size and room, and we grout to consistent depth so lines look uniform throughout.

πŸ›‘οΈ
Sealing

Unsealed grout stains within weeks. We seal all grout lines after installation β€” and can seal natural stone tile too if that's what you're using.

πŸ”§
Schluter Trim & Transitions

Where tile meets other flooring or thresholds, we use proper Schluter metal trim β€” not caulk and hope. Clean edges that won't chip, crack, or lift over time.

What We Install

Tile Types We Work With

πŸ”·

Porcelain

The workhorse. Dense, low-absorption, frost-resistant, and available in massive-format slabs that look stunning with minimal grout lines. Our most-installed tile type.

🏺

Ceramic

More affordable than porcelain, great for walls and light-traffic floors. Softer and more porous β€” we seal it properly and recommend it for dry areas.

πŸͺ¨

Natural Stone

Slate, travertine, marble, quartzite β€” each with unique character. Requires sealing and more maintenance than ceramic or porcelain, but nothing looks quite like it.

πŸ”²

Large Format

24"Γ—24" and larger tiles are trending in Salem homes right now. Fewer grout lines, more modern feel. Requires very flat substrate β€” we use self-leveling compound when needed.

✨

Mosaic & Decorative

Accent borders, shower niches, backsplashes, decorative insets. Small-scale detail work that makes a space feel custom and intentional.

🌊

Wood-Look Porcelain

The look of hardwood with the durability of tile. Perfect for bathrooms and mudrooms where you want warmth without water risk.

Common Questions

Tile FAQ

Why did my tile crack?

Almost always a substrate issue β€” either the subfloor was too flexible, the thinset coverage was incomplete, or the grout joint was too tight to handle movement. Proper installation prevents all of these.

How long does tile installation take?

A typical bathroom floor is one day setting, one day grouting and sealing. Kitchen floors are usually 2–3 days depending on size and layout complexity.

Can tile go over existing tile?

Sometimes β€” if the existing tile is well-bonded, flat, and in good condition. We assess the situation during the estimate. Adding height may affect door clearances and transitions.

Do I need to seal my tile?

Porcelain generally doesn't need sealing. Ceramic and natural stone do. All grout should be sealed regardless of tile type β€” we do this as part of every tile job.

What does tile installation cost in Salem?

Tile is mid-to-high range depending on material and layout complexity. Contact us for a free written estimate specific to your project.
